Chatting cakes on ABC Afternoons – Dani Valent

I love dropping into ABC Radio Melbourne to chat about food. This time it was one of my favourite topics: cakes. Monique Bowley is filling in for regular host Clare Bowditch today and she asked listeners to call in to tell us about their most memorable cakes. Listen in below.

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of cakes! I love the festive touch they bring to dinners or parties even when there’s nothing particular to celebrate. I love the way they bring people together to share something, making every individual part of a whole. I also really like the delicious alchemy of simple ingredients: flour, eggs, sugar and fat become so much more than the sum of their parts.

It’s also a source of great pleasure that cakes can differ so much. They can be simple, complex, square, round, dense, fluffy, plain or decorated. I’m not much of a cake decorator but I definitely appreciate the art, so long as it’s still more about the cake than the frou frou. I simply don’t understand fancy-looking cakes that don’t taste good.

One of my most popular recipes is Basque Cheesecake. Read how I fell in love with it here and see the video and recipe here.

Watch the video and get the recipe for my Plum Syrup Cake here. It’s delicious made with pears too!
